Mels is a portmanteau name, a contraction of “Mental Health”. Drawn at the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic, this family of characters is intended to be human and benevolent, ideal for announcing good news in these times of uncertainty. Inspired by pictograph systems, its design is sans serif and rigorously geometric, yet has its own inconsistencies that echo the individuality within the system. In fact, this incohesion of design leads to playful characters, readable in small size but which will be of interest to the eye if used in titling. Letter endings are raw. Not aligned with the baseline or x-height, they follow the line drawn by the barrel. Finally, Mels wants to be accessible thanks to a drawing that is easy to decipher even for people with visual impairments, but also because it supports a large number of languages.
