Ambroise Font: An exquisite Didot font in 18 series Ambroise Font is a contemporary interpretation of various characters belonging to the late style of Didot, designed around 1830, including the original forms of g, y, &; and to a lesser extent, k. These unique glyphs are found in the Gras Vibert, cut by Michel Vibert.
Vibert was the official puncher of the Didot family at this time. It is the Heavy, whose sources are most reliable, that Jean François Porchez used as the basis for the design of the type family. In the second half of the 19th century, it was common to find Didot bolds in several widths in the catalogs of French type foundries. These same characters continued to be offered until the disappearance of the great French foundries in the 1960s.
Ambroise attempts to reproduce more faithfully what one sees printed on paper in the 19th century; a more exact representation of the Didot punches. So, unframed serifs are not true square straight shapes, but instead use tiny transition curves. The result on the page looks softer and less straight, especially at larger sizes.
