The magazine was founded in 1929 by The Atlantic Monthly Company co-founder Henry Luce to regularly publish ranked lists, including the Fortune 500, a ranking of companies by revenue.
From its inception in 1930 to 1978, Fortune was published monthly. In January 1978, a bipartisan publication began. In October 2009, Fortune began publishing every three weeks, citing declining revenue and advertising circulation. In 2018, Fortune will be released 14 times a year.
