Thorn Serif is a characterful font family inspired by the raw, punched typography of ancient Roman coinage. Carrying the hallmarks of this historic era, it features minimal stroke contrast and rugged, “carved” serifs as if struck by a matrix. It includes 8 weights (from a sharp Hairline to a monolithic Black), all available in a single variable font file. With broad language support, rich OpenType features, and carefully tuned spacing and kerning, Thorn Serif delivers a powerful, timeless aesthetic for high-impact display and editorial design.
Developed by Type Forward, Thorn Serif bridges ancient craftsmanship with modern digital typography. Its high x-height, compact ascenders, and unified proportions provide a solid, monumental appearance that retains maximum legibility. The typeface balances raw historical features with precise modern execution, performing reliably across headlines, branding, and packaging.
